Survival mode is not a switch. It is a ladder — a sequenced descent through operating states, each with characteristic physiology, cognition, affect, and behavior.
The rungs
- 01Capacity window — the system is operating within its sustainable range.
- 02Adaptive strain — reserves are being spent faster than they return.
- 03Defensive activation — protective systems engage.
- 04Compressed operation — executive function narrows toward survival management.
- 05Shutdown zone — the system conserves by going offline.
The lower rungs are not pathology. They are protection. Reading them as failure misses what the system is accomplishing.
